Advent at GPC

Beginning Sunday, November 29th, our church will enter the season of Advent, the first season of the Christian church year, leading up to Christmas and including the four preceding Sundays.

Our sanctuary is decorated for the holidays, and we offer special liturgies to help our congregation reflect on the promise of Jesus’ birth. Children take part in our traditional readings and Advent candle lighting services, as well as our Christmas pageant, held on Christmas Eve at 5pm.  Later that evening, we will host a candlelight service at 11pm.

On December 5, our Hospitality Committee will host its annual St. Nick’s dinner at 5:30pm in the Georgetown Room.  This is a family-friendly event, with a special appearance by Santa Claus!  For more info and to sign-up, please visit:

Elder Matthew Taylor will offer a series of lectures December 6, 13, and 20 during the Adult Sunday School hour (hosted in the Washington Room at 9:45am) on the topic of “Remembering Mary.” For more info, visit

For worship on December 13 and 20, we continue our tradition of celebrating Advent and Christmas with two special musical services. First, on December 13, the service will incorporate movements of Handel’s beloved oratorio Messiah into the worship liturgy. This well-known work has been performed often through the years with GPC’s choir and orchestral accompaniment. This year, equipped with musical scores, the congregation will be encouraged to join their voices with those of the choir for a Messiah sing-along. Several of the most popular choruses will be sung, including of course the Hallelujah Chorus.

The next Sunday, December 20, will be GPC’s traditional Service of Lessons and Carols. In honor of the passing this September of the great choirmaster and arranger of carols, Sir David Willcocks, the carols for the service will feature his grand arrangements for brass and organ. Also presented in the service will be John Rutter’s Gloria, a three movement work for choir, brass, percussion and organ.

On December 24, at 5pm, the families and friends of GPC come together for worship and a traditional ChristmasPageant. Hymns, candles, angels and shepherds await you on this magical evening featuring the children and youth of GPC. Later that evening, at 11pm, we will host a Christmas Eve Candlelight Service with carols, scripture, meditation, and anthems.
