Advent Cantata by J.S. Bach
December 14, 11 a.m.
During worship the Georgetown choir, along with an ensemble of baroque instruments, will present Johann Sebastian Bach’s Cantata, BWV 147, Herz und Mund und That und Leben (Heart and mouth and deed and life). Bach composed the first six movements for the Advent season in 1716, while working in Weimar. Seven years later, in his first year as director of music in Leipzig, he added four movements, to perform the cantata for the feast celebrating the visitation of Mary.
On December 14, we will integrate this cantata into the liturgy of our worship, as it would have been experienced three centuries ago, with part one (six movements) before the sermon and part two after. These cantatas were written for worship, not the concert stage, and experiencing this music as part of our Advent worship will add depth and beautify to the joy of the season.
