GPC has a long and storied history of fulfilling our Christian obligation of love to those who have been displaced from their homes. We are reminded that the people of Israel were themselves strangers and sojourners, and Scripture reminds us to be hospitable to the stranger as we were once strangers ourselves (Leviticus 19:34). Over the last half century plus, GPC has welcomed and assisted refugee families from Hungary, Vietnam, Cambodia, Bosnia, and other places where conflict and violence have displaced people.
Right now, almost 70 million people have been forcibly displaced from their homes. Some have resettled in the DMV area, some still suffer around the world. Below is a list of organizations GPC is partnering with to help alleviate the acute suffering of refugees, and to help foster a more hopeful future.
Right now, we are inviting you to help us, through Lutheran Social Services, collect both household items for refugees currently settled in the DMV area, and jump start a new vocational training program for women. During the month of November, we are inviting people to donate the following items that will be collected by December 2nd:
- 30 Sewing Machines
- 30 Brooms
- Assorted Fabric
- Sewing Kits
- Wetwipes/Women’s Hygiene Wipes
- Bed Sheets (Twin and Full)
- Laundry Detergent
- Baby Powder
- Hand Sanitizer
