Who? Excel is the first all-girls public charter school in DC and serves students from K-8. Founded a decade ago, Excel strives to help each student with the skills and vision for high school, college, and beyond.

What? GPC has begun a “Family Assistance Fund” at Excel. Many of Excel’s students and families are economically at-risk – students miss school for lack of adequate clothing, shelter, and even food. Social workers seek to connect families with resources, but sometimes a student simply needs a gift card for a new pair of shoes, or a family needs to put a few things in the pantry. We are raising money to allow teachers and social workers to help students succeed academically by taking away some of these essential barriers to success.

Where? Right here at GPC in the Georgetown Room! This fun event will feature a meal shared with students, parents, and teachers from Excel, student performances (including dance, vocal, and poetry), and stories from the staff of Excel to help us understand the depth of need and the heights of opportunity. The evening will also feature a display of student artwork displaying the immense talents that these girls have to give.

When? You saw it above, but don’t forget: Saturday, March 10th, from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

Why? Many of us know that Excel recently lost its charter with the DC Public Charter School Board. We believe that many issues beyond their control contributed to that outcome. It also doesn’t mean that Excel is closing. Beginning in the 2018-19 school year, they will be a DC Public School, and students will have the continuity of staying in their own school. We know that, regardless of the sort of school these students are in, they still have basic needs they need to succeed. This fund will remain dedicated (by law) to these needs, even after the transfer occurs between the Public Charter School Board and DCPS.

How much? Single tickets are $75, and couples are $140.
